We recommend steel posts. Steel is stronger, won't "bend like a noodle" (deflect), and won't rot. Use galvanised or powder-coated steel to beat rust.
Timber is okay for temporary setups, but remember: wood breathes and eventually fails. Steel is a permanent friend.
2. Post Footings: The 1/3 Rule
A shade sail is a giant kite. An old engineering principle is “1 third in, 2 thirds out”.
Example: A post 2400mm (8’) high needs at least 1200mm (4’) in the ground.
⚠️ Note: Loose landfill or garden beds don't count! You need to dig into solid earth.
4. The Ground Beneath You: UK Soil Types
Your footing is only as strong as the earth holding it. British soil varies, and your hole depth must account for this:
Heavy Clay (Common in South East/Midlands): Excellent holding power once set, but prone to "heave." Stick strictly to the 1/3rd rule.
Sandy/Loose Soil (Coastal Areas): Poor lateral resistance. We recommend increasing your hole diameter by 100mm and adding an extra 200mm in depth for better "dead weight" stability.
Chalky/Rocky Ground: High stability but difficult to dig. Ensure you reach the required depth; shallow footings in rock can still "lever" out under high tension.
3. Hole Diameters & Concrete
Keep hole diameters around 350mm (1’2”). While width is good, depth is the most important factor for stability.

Pre-Purchase Reality Check
Before you hit 'Buy' on that beautiful shade sail, run through this list to ensure your poles (and your sanity) are ready:
Underground Check: Have you checked for gas lines, water pipes, or electricity cables exactly where you plan to dig 4-foot holes?
The Neighbor Factor: Will your giant new poles block your neighbor’s view or cast a shadow over their prized begonias?
Vertical Ambition: Have you accounted for the "1/3rd rule" when buying your steel? If you want 8ft of height, you need to buy a 12ft pole.
Lean In: Remember that poles should be installed with a slight lean (3-5 degrees) away from the center of the sail.
Concrete Logistics: Do you have a plan for getting several bags of heavy concrete to the hole locations?
⚠️ Mandatory Safety Requirement:
These tips are based on a proprietary methodology proven over decades. However, all shade sails must be removed immediately if high winds, gusts, or snowfall are expected.
The Exception: Only structures specifically engineered and certified by SD Sails Ltd for defined wind loads are permitted to remain standing in adverse weather. Reliance on these general tips is at the customer's own risk.
